42 Mexican police officers arrested on drug charges

TOLUCA, Mexico - State and federal authorities have arrested more than four dozen city police officers in central Mexico state on suspicion of selling drugs to schoolchildren, government officials said Friday.

Agents from the offices of the federal and state attorneys general arrested 42 officers Thursday from Ecatepec, a city of nearly 3 million people on the outskirts of Mexico City, state Attorney General Alfonso Navarrete said.

The arrests came after an eight-month investigation that was prompted by complaints from parents.

The officers sold marijuana and cocaine to students at elementary and high schools, as well as in small stores, investigators said.

The Federal Investigative Agency and state police participated in the operation.

Clandestine drug sales are a problem in Ecatepec and various other cities where many who live in extreme poverty are tempted to earn a living illegally, officials said.
